The Total Solar Eclipse in 2017

Astronomy Colloquium (2017 Fall Semester)

* Title
The Total Solar Eclipse in 2017
* Abstract

On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse made its way through the North American Continent and millions of people, including hundreds of visitors from Korea, looked on as the Moon blocked out the Sun. After this great solar eclipse left us in awe, I have been occupied with a couple of questions: which scientific knowledge could we best learn from this historical event? Which type of scientific research will maximally exploit the greatness of the eclipse? In this talk, I will try to answer these questions with a handful of data collected from the publicly accessible internet sites. The talk will start with a brief review of the media coverage on the eclipse in both Korea and North America. I will then touch upon the following topics: the fine structure of solar corona density, spectrum, polarization, and the large-scale magnetic field with highlights on the latest result of the Citizen CATE (Continental-America Telescopic Eclipse) experiment.
