ALMA reveals a rotating dense molecular torus in NGC 1068
* Abstract

The unification paradigm of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) postulates that a dusty molecular torus is present around a mass accreting supermassive black hole (SMBH), in order to naturally explain the presence of type-1 broad-line and type-2 narrow-line AGNs.
This paradigm was originally proposed based on old observations of the nearby type-2 AGN, NGC 1068 (d ~ 14 Mpc). However, our observational understanding of the putative AGN torus has been highly incomplete even for nearby AGNs, simply because the torus is spatially compact (<10 pc or <0.15″ at >10 Mpc). We present the results of our very high-spatial-resolution (0.04 x 0.07″) ALMA observations of the NGC 1068 nucleus. We have for the first time clearly detected dense molecular gas emission oriented along the east-west direction both morphologically and dynamically, as expected for NGC 1068. I will report detailed observational properties of the dense molecular torus in NGC 1068 revealed from our ALMA observations.

I will also briefly mention our ALMA molecular line observations of deeply buried luminous AGNs in merging ultraluminous infrared galaxies.
