Astronomy Colloquium (2015 Spring Semester)

* Date
March 12
* Speaker
Prof. Myungshin Im (서울대 물리천문학부)
* Title
구천문대 재개발사업 소개 (Reconstruction of the first SNU Optical Astronomy Observatory)
* Abstract

Since its foundation in 1978, The 1st SNU Optical  Observatory (SNUO-I; 구천문대) has been playing a key role in education and research activities of the SNU Astronomy program. However,, SNUO-I is now nearly 40 years old, and the environment  of  SNUO-II (신천문대) has worsened for astronomical observation. In order to improve the observational capability of SNU on-camups optical telescope facilities, we have recently decided to reconstruct SNUO-I, and our budget request has been approved by the university. We will outline our current plan for the reconstruction of SNUO-I, which includes facilities such as a 1-m class telescope, a coelostat, and a sliding dome for small telescopes. We hope to make the new SNUO-I as a landmark of SNU, and use it to promote science for public too. This talk is intended for introducing our plan and gathering feedback from members of Astronomy program. At the end of the talk, we will set aside time for questions  and discussion, and you inputs will be highly appreciated.
