Astronomy Colloquium (2021 Spring Semester)

* Date
May 06
* Speaker
Prof. Otto van Koert(SNU Dept. of Mathematics)
* Title
Mathematics and the three-body problem
* Abstract

In this talk, I will survey the role of the three-body problem in the development of mathematics. This ancient problem in astronomy has effectively generated a couple of subfields in mathematics such as dynamical systems and symplectic geometry. I will explain some features of the three-body problem that bring mathematicians back to this problem even now. In particular, I will describe a couple of recent results.
