When experimenting with stars and galaxies is humanly impossible, numerical experiments are often the only means to test our theory of galaxy formation — the building block of cosmological structure formation. Fortunately, the community of numerical galaxy formation has benefited a lot from the ever-improving computing technology over the past decades. In this talk, I will discuss the new possibilities in the upcoming era of high-resolution numerical galaxy formation, and highlight efforts to overcome the accompanying challenges. I will also describe the AGORA initiative — the community effort to guarantee the “reproducibility” of galaxy formation simulations, and to raise the predictive power of numerical cosmology.
