KVN and Optical Observatory at Pyengchang Campus
Introduce
We are going to host the fourth telescope of the Korea VLBI Network (KVN) operated by Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute at the Pyeongchang campus. Together with the Pyeongchang Optical observatory, this will be one of the major facilities in our program. The extended KVN will be commissioned in around 2024. Science targets include black holes, active galactic nuclei, young stars, and dying stars.
The Pyeongchang campus will also host an optical observatory with a 0.6m telescope, which is expected to be completed by early 2023. This telescope will be remotely operated from the Gwanak campus, including robotic observational capability which enables the telescope to do observations on its own with minimal human intervention. Also, the observatory will be used for carrying out astronomical research like the study of the solar system objects, exoplanets, galaxy evolution, supermassive black holes, and multi-messenger astronomy.
